This must be what it's like
to party in a war zone. It was the last night of business
at the old Hidden Tree and the place was jam-packed. The
crowds jostled and smoked, danced and drank. Outside fat
snowflakes fell silently on the chunky concrete detritus
of torn-down Sanlitun bars as explosions of Lantern Festival
fireworks set off car alarms blocks away. Inside people
partied like there was no tomorrow. Hidden Tree's pizza
chefs didn't stop kneading dough and spreading cheese from
the early evening until 100 pizzas later, when every last
raw ingredient had been sold. With Piet from YPHH presiding,
free beers flowed and the crowd lingered till past 1am,
when the curtain closed on a Beijing institution. [text
